The Beagle Brigade’s new, revamped lineup showed up at Bryn Mawr Park Monday night in the fierce cold, with rain whipping about in the wind, to take on the Swingers in co-ed softball action. Five players were scheduled to make their debut in our much improved Beagle lineup, but the game never happened. Not because of the weather, surprisingly, but because the other team never showed up. Thanks a lot for the heads-up, Swingers’ manager.
The umpire called the game at 7:02pm in the Beagle Brigade’s favor, thus ending our team’s losing streak at 2. Rather than pack up and call it a night, the team divided into halves and played a quick pick-up game through the driving rain. In my second at bat, I drilled a deep fly ball to center field that Feeney chased after. I circled the bases and was heading home, when I could tell a relay throw was coming to the plate. Not wanting to turn my head and get drilled in the face, I just put my hands over my head and hoped for the best. Sure enough, Craig’s bullet throw to the plate smoked me in the hand/head, causing the team plenty of concern for my well-being. My hand swelled up, but thankfully nothing was broken. Lauren showed off her improved batting skills as well, hitting a 2-run single to left.
Afterwards, the team gathered at sponsor bar The Herkimer for dinner. Next week the team plays Sons of Pitches and we try to run our win streak to 2.
I really like the teams’ names, especially the Sons of Pitches…Clever!
