Last night, for whatever reason, I could not fall asleep. I was just bursting with energy from 10:45 until almost 3:00. I could have easily gotten some shoes on and gone outside and run non-stop for an hour. I can not recall ever feeling so much energy ever before in my life, and for no apparent reason. Moving from one bed to another to the couch and back did nothing. Knowing it was my morning to get up with Johnny, I finally caved and took some sleep aid medication around 2:30, so I did get close to four hours of sleep. At 7 I woke up, somehow fresh and perky, and was ready to parent.

Oh what a day Johnny and I had. I decided to take him to the park in the stroller, and took a very long roundabout route there. After playing for about an hour with a random 6-year-old named Lucas following us around and telling us all about his Chinese grandmother, we departed the park and headed home. Johnny was running down a path in the park with a stick with me following behind, and he ran up to an old hobbling woman screaming like a warrior and mimicked smashing her. Ugh. We don’t do that in our family!

When we got home, Johnny hopped out of the stroller and I hit the garage door opener. I turned back to fold up the stroller, and when I turned around, I couldn’t believe what had happened in three short seconds. Johnny was dangling several feet off the ground, hanging on to the garage door handle. He had grabbed ahold and ridden the garage door all the way to the top, and somehow managed to hold on! I grabbed him and set him down. I was laughing hysterically, and he remarked “I want to do it again!” Wow. Here’s the Nest video of my reaction to it, anyway…

In the afternoon we attended his old school friend Nikhil’s fourth birthday at Catch Air, one of those fun indoor bouncy play type areas. Fun as it was, it unfortunately coincided perfectly with nap time, so the boy went without a nap for the day, and instead loaded up on frosting and popcorn and juice boxes!

At night we went out to dinner at old standby Jardin Corona with the Megos, and Johnny was acting a bit looney, running around the restaurant jumping into booths and kicking and screaming on the ground… not totally unexpected after his long, tiring day and lack of nap. We even attempted to go to the Megos’ new house afterwards, but it didn’t last long. We finally had to admit defeat and come home and put the dude to bed.

Tonight I will sleep a long night of sleep, for Sunday is Lauren’s day to take over the bulk of kid duties!

In other random news…

  • Bart Christoff and I have now recorded 4 episodes of our How To Do That podcast. Much like my first foray into podcasting with the Shed Party Show in 2011, I don’t think too many people are listening, but again, the primary purpose here is that it’s a fun hobby for us.
  • I’ve also written upwards of 50 blog posts since late September on the How To Do That site, explaining a lack of new material here!
  • Lauren and I went to see Jim Gaffigan for a rare night out last Saturday at the ACL Theater. He was funny, as expected. Unfortunately I got stung by a bee on my left fingertip moments before the show!
