My annual MLB predictions are back! In 2024, I correctly predicted the Dodgers would win the World Series, only I had guessed Orioles as their opponent. Earlier this decade I correctly predicted the exact World Series matchups and outcomes twice—Braves over Astros in 2021 and Dodgers over Rays in 2020. Overall in 2024, my playoff predictions were horrible, correctly predicting only 6 of the 12 teams, and only 2 of 6 in the American League.
You will notice a few surprises here. I have three new division winners in the AL—Red Sox in the East, Tigers in the Central, Rangers in the West. The Red Sox adding Bregman and Crochet pushes them over the top, I think. The Tigers are on the up-and-up and stunned everyone last year. The Rangers are just two years removed from their World Series title, and I think they’ll bounce back to make another run this year. I am predicting no surprises in the NL, with basically the same crop of playoff teams as last year except I swapped Arizona in for San Diego.
I would obviously hope the Twins would win the division—and most projection systems seem to think they will—but that collapse to end last season was really unsettling, and the team didn’t really make many changes in the winter. If I’ve said it once, I’ve said it a thousand times—if Buxton, Correa and Lewis are all at 100% health for the full-season, the Twins will make a deep run. The odds of that are very, very low.
I would be shocked if a team other than the Dodgers wins the 2025 World Series. I think their best competition might be in the NL, with the Phillies and Mets. There are at least eight AL teams that wouldn’t surprise me to see in the World Series (Red Sox, Orioles, Yankees, Tigers, Royals, Rangers, Astros, and Guardians) and one that should be on that list, but obviously would greatly surprise me in the Twins.
