Last night was the Captain Safety Planet end-of-the-season team BBQ at our house, and it went off very successfully, unless you count the police paying us a visit. I thought it would be fun to crank some tunes with the DJ equipment, so I set it up in the backyard and pumped the bass throughout the neighborhood. Meanwhile, many gathered in Dr. Martini’s parking lot across the alley to play goofy golf and tip back a few beers while we cooked up some meat on the grill. Around 8:30, Sarah took over DJing and got on the microphone to ask if any of us had any requests. Our angry neighbor poked his head over the fence and said “I’ve got a request, turn that shit off!” Moments later the cops arrived and killed the music and told us to “watch the boozing,” whatever that means.
Once the party was moved inside, Nick yet again turned on his recording of the Vikings-Chargers game from last season where Adrian Peterson set the NFL rushing record with 296 yards. Not wanting to again be the target of jokes and derogatory comments, I headed to bed early.
Lauren and I recently discovered that we do, in fact, have one or two minor differences in taste. It took a while, but we finally found something that we cannot agree on! On Sunday, Nick, Lauren, and I went to the new Batman movie, Dark Knight, in the theater. For Nick and Lauren, it was their second times seeing the movie. Jason, by the way, has been four times already. I usually hate those types of movies, but Heath Ledger turned in an awesome performance as the Joker and I left very satisfied. One of the previews I thought looked good was some high school mockumentary. Lauren and Nick were unimpressed and later gave me a hard time for being hung up on shows and movies based in high school.
Is it wrong that I find that genre so interesting? Shows like Freaks and Geeks, The Wonder Years, Undeclared, Weird Science, and Saved by the Bell are among my all-time favorites. And I think movies like Dazed and Confused, Superbad, Juno, The Breakfast Club, Napoleon Dynamite, Ferris Bueller, Mean Girls, and American Pie are all awesome. Apparently so do guys like Judd Apatow and Peter Engel, who are constantly involved in productions like that.
Lauren refuses to give those types of movies and shows a chance most of the time. Sunday, I talked her into watching twenty minutes of Napoleon Dynamite. She wasn’t the least bit entertained, so I turned it off and agreed not to pressure her into liking those kind of movies anymore. But then again, I don’t find her beloved James Bond movies the least bit interesting! I guess we can’t have identical tastes in everything, though we’ll always have our baseball movies!
