I usually get fairly excited for the Emmy Awards because I watch a lot of TV and, with the exception of the miniseries/made-for-TV-movie awards, am familiar with most of the nominees.
“30 Rock” is a great show and Tina Fey is quickly becoming the biggest name in the industry. I’ve seen every episode and on occasion I think it’s the funniest of NBC’s Thursday night lineup. But I can’t believe how much the critics love it! It was nominated for 17 Emmys and won at least five, including Best Actor (Alec Baldwin), Best Actress (Tina Fey), and Best Comedy. Last season’s bit with Tracy’s music video “Werewolf Bar Mitzvah” was one of the funniest things I’ve seen on TV in years. That said, I still think “30 Rock” is only the fourth funniest show on Thursday nights after “The Office,” “Scrubs,” and “Always Sunny.”
For Best Comedy, my vote would have gone to “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” which I thought had its strongest season last year with Larry taking in the Black family. For Best Actor in a Comedy, I would have gone with Steve Carrell over Alec Baldwin, and for Best Actor in a Drama I would have taken Michael C. Hall (Dexter) over Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad). Ricky Gervais was hilarious for the short time he was on stage as a presenter, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus had a funny monologue.
Beyond that, the ceremony was a disaster. I don’t know whose idea it was to have the five nominees for Outstanding Reality Host to share hosting duties, but it that person should be fired after a disastrous, uncomfortable opening. Jeremy Piven’s shot at the opening sequence was spot-on when he accepted the first award of the night for Outstanding Supporting Actor. “I could stand up here and talk for twelve minutes, but that was taken care of in the opening dialogue.” Or something like that.
Plans this week are largely centered around the Twins as they try to make one final push towards the playoffs. The Twins face the White Sox in a critical three-game series starting tomorrow, and Lauren and I will be there using my birthday tickets from Alex and Ann. Depending on the success of that game, we could be back out for more. Hopefully the Twins don’t interfere too much with Carpenter Bash plans! I know the Glanzers don’t get Fox Sports Net at the house.
