It was quite the Home Run Derby last night at Yankee Stadium. For the first time in history, a Twins player won the derby when Justin Morneau out-slugged Josh Hamilton for the title. Hamilton undoubtedly is a great story. A former #1 pick, Hamilton ruined his career with drug and alcohol abuse, but after being traded to Texas this offseason has resurrected his career in a big way, leading the majors in RBI and near the top in batting average and homers. Hamilton set a record in the first round of the derby with 28 homers (21 more than Morneau), including 13 in a row. Everyone in Yankee Stadium began chanting “Ham-il-ton! Ham-il-ton!”
But he must have tired himself out, because Morneau wound up beating him in the finals. No one gave a crap about Morneau. Even after he had won, ESPN pushed him out of the way and ran over to talk to Hamilton. When State Farm presented Morneau’s charity with a novelty oversized check, then called him “Jason” Morneau. Then the lady from ESPN called him Justin “Mar-neau.” And then some other guy from MLB called him Justin “Murrnaw.” Really? Is it that hard? “More-no.”
Speaking of people being idiots. I don’t get how people drive so fast in the morning. On my way to work Monday morning, I steadily drove over 5mph the whole way, sometimes as fast at 10mph over the limit, yet I was being blown off the road by everyone else. The vast majority of cars on the road were easily going 70 in a 55, and on a road heavily patrolled. I see someone pulled over every morning. Do people leave their houses so late for work that they have to resort to risking tickets to get to work on time?
Oh by the way, our EP softball team got absolutely bitch-slapped in two games last night and are now 0-13 on the year. Our Minneapolis team is going for its fourth straight win tonight, however!
